Systems / Infrastructure / Information
A working surface for connected ideasSystems and information,
put to work.
Computer systems, data processing and web infrastructure for organisations with information to put to work.
Discuss a projectA system, a dataset, a website or a collection: begin with the part that needs attention.
Explore the connections ↓Connected capabilities
Four connected
areas of work.
A project may concern one area or several. A website can depend on prepared content; a search portal can depend on consistent records. Identifying those connections helps define the work.
Each responsibility has its own questions. The boundaries between them deserve equal attention.
Computer systems design
Design around
the work.
Start with the activities a system must support: who uses it, which information enters it, which components exchange that information, and what should happen next. Existing applications and manual steps belong in the same picture.
A useful scope identifies component responsibilities, interfaces and operational constraints. Deliverables to agree may include a requirements brief, a system diagram, interface descriptions or implementation priorities.
Relevant enquiries include connecting separate tools, defining a new web service or clarifying a system before development decisions are made.
What belongs at an interface?
The information exchanged, its expected structure, the receiving component and the conditions that affect the exchange.
Computing infrastructure & web hosting
Give the service an
operating environment.
The appropriate environment depends on what a website or application does, what it stores, how it is accessed and who will operate it.
Before agreeing work, establish the existing environment, domain arrangements, access requirements and dependencies. Clarify whether the request concerns a new deployment, an existing hosted service or a change to its supporting infrastructure.
Initial setup
Define the deployment scope, necessary access, configuration responsibilities and information required for handover.
Continuing operation
Agree ownership, maintenance expectations and administrative responsibilities separately. Hosting alone does not define an ongoing support arrangement.
Data processing & preparation
Prepare information
for its next task.
Supplied records need a structure suited to their intended use. Start by identifying what each record represents, which fields matter and what the receiving process expects.
Possible work includes reorganising fields, standardising formats and identifying incomplete entries. Agree transformation rules first: an apparent inconsistency may carry meaning.

- One entry per document
- Group becomes category
- Keep month-level precision

- issue_month

Search portals & information services
A route from
question to record.
Search and retrieval connect a question with relevant material. Libraries, archives and related information collections also depend on how items are described, grouped and made accessible.
An enquiry might involve a searchable collection, directory, archive interface or information portal. Define the source material, intended users and access conditions alongside categories, filters and result descriptions.
Content structure and retrieval behaviour belong together. A search box needs information with enough organisation to support a useful result.

Collection notes explain descriptive fields and the limits of the material, helping readers interpret their results.

Defining an engagement
Turn a question
into an agreed scope.
Context
Describe the present situation and intended outcome. Identify the systems, material or environment involved, together with relevant constraints.
Establish the starting point
Which parts already exist, who uses them and what needs to change?
Scope
Separate essential requirements from open decisions. Agree outputs, dependencies and responsibilities before implementation begins.
Make the boundaries explicit
Identify what is included, what depends on another party and which decisions remain open.
Work
Relate implementation decisions to the agreed purpose. Where examples or sample material are needed, agree what is appropriate to share.
Keep meaning visible
Record relevant assumptions and transformation rules so the resulting work can be understood.
Review
Check outputs against their specification and intended use. Completion should include the agreed material and sufficient explanation for its recipient.
Review the intended outcome
Consider required exchanges, file structure or access to information, according to the engagement.
Before an enquiry
Useful questions.
Clearer beginnings.
Can an enquiry cover one service?
Yes. Identify the immediate need; related dependencies can then be considered without assuming a complete rebuild.
What if requirements are incomplete?
Describe the situation, intended users and difficulty you want to resolve. Mark uncertain points clearly.
Should files accompany the first message?
Begin with their type and structure. Agree an appropriate way to share material if it becomes necessary.
Are technologies or support predetermined?
Requirements, technologies, deliverables and any continuing responsibilities need agreement for the particular engagement.
Company profile
EM DASH LABS LTD
The company's activities span computer systems design and related computer services; computing infrastructure, data processing and web hosting; web search portals; and library, archive and other information services.
These subjects define the work discussed here. Each enquiry establishes the specific requirements and expected outputs.

Tell us what
needs to work.
Describe the system, hosting requirement, dataset or information resource involved. Include the intended outcome and relevant constraints or timing considerations. A concise explanation is enough to establish the subject.
